Zachary Watterson's short stories and essays have appeared in numerous publications, including, recently, Chicago Quarterly Review, Paris Review Daily and the W. W. Norton anthology Inheriting the War: Poetry and Prose by Descendants of Vietname Veterans and Refugees . An essay published in Post Road was listed as a Notable Essay in Best American Essays 2013.
He has degrees from Colorado College and the University of Washington and has been awarded fellowships from the Jentel Foundation, the Elizabeth George Foundation, and the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference.
Zachary grew up in New York City and New Jersey. He taught writing and improvisational theater workshops in prisons in Michigan, and he taught creative writing and GED preparation to prisoners in Washington state. Outside the United States, he lived for three months in Nicaragua and six months in South Africa and has traveled in Lebanon, Spain, Italy, Russia, Poland, Belarus, Croatia, and Zimbabwe. He has built rock staircases in the Adirondacks, taught at a high school in Albuquerque, served as an editor and managing editor, and worked as a brick and stone mason in Seattle. After eight years in Seattle, he currently lives with his family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
