The UMass Amherst MFA located in Western Massachusetts, two hours from Boston and three hours from New York City, encourages students to complete a book manuscript during their three years in the program. Nearly all students are fully funded through the Writing Program with opportunities to teach creative writing one semester in their third year. Other paid and summer opportunities available through the Juniper Summer Adult Institute and the Juniper Summer Institute for Young Writers. Faculty include: Peter Gizzi, Noy Holland, Edie Meidav, Sabina Murray, Jeff Parker, Ocean Vuong, and Dara Wier.

MFA candidates are funded through a range of appointments including Teaching Associate, Teaching Assistant, and Research Assistant position; fellowships; and paid internships. Currently, 100% of full-time candidates are funded at a level sufficient to bring a waiver of tuition and most fees plus an annual stipend of around $24,000. In addition, the MFA Program offers several smaller fellowships and awards each year.
