Nomi Stone

Nomi Stone is a poet and an anthropologist, and the author of two poetry collections, Stranger's Notebook (TriQuarterly 2008) and Kill Class (Tupelo 2019). Winner of a Pushcart Prize, Stone's poems appear recently in POETRY MagazineAmerican Poetry ReviewThe New RepublicThe Best American Poetry,  Bettering American PoetryTin HouseNew England Review, and elsewhere. In 2018, her poem, "War Poem" was turned into a film in Motion Poems Season 8, "Dear Mr. President," chosen as one of 10 contemporary poets.  In 2019, her poem "Fieldnotes from the Edge" was selected by the Poetry Society of America to appear on buses across Rhode Island and throughout Brown University. Kill Class is based on two years of fieldwork she conducted within war trainings in mock Middle Eastern villages erected by the US military across America. Her ethnographic monographic, Pineland: Human Technology and American Empire, is currently a finalist for the University of California Press Atelier series for Ethnographic Inquiry in the 21st Century, and her anthropological articles appear in Cultural Anthropology and American Ethnologist. Stone has an MFA in Poetry from Warren Wilson, a PhD in Anthropology from Columbia, and an MPhil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies from Oxford.
