I was born in Guatemala where I obtained my MD from the University of San Carlos. After 18 months as a Research Fellow at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, I completed a residency in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Miami followed by a Neuroradiology Fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta. I then returned to the University of Texas in Houston and for the last 29 years, I have been a Neuroradiologist (28 years as Division Chief) at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Currently, I am the Matthew A. Mauro Distinguished Professor of Radiology and have served as President of the American Roentgen Ray Society and the American Society of Neuroradiology and received Gold Medals from both societies. I am Emeritus Editor in Chief of the American Journal of Neuroradiology and a diplomate of the American Board of Radiology with a certificate of Added Qualifications in Neuroradiology.
