Son of a white mother and African American father, Matthew Morris writes most often through questions of race, identity, and family history. His essays appear or are forthcoming in Fourth GenreSeneca ReviewMid-American Review, and apt, among others. He is a co-winner of Fourth Genre's 2021 Steinberg Memorial Essay Prize, graduated from the MFA program at the University of Arizona in 2021, and is working on a manuscript about the trope of the tragic mulatto.
