Son of a white mother and African American father, Matthew Morris writes most often through questions of race, identity, and family history. His essays appear or are forthcoming in Fourth Genre, Seneca Review, Mid-American Review, and apt, among others. He is a co-winner of Fourth Genre's 2021 Steinberg Memorial Essay Prize, graduated from the MFA program at the University of Arizona in 2021, and is working on a manuscript about the trope of the tragic mulatto.
