Malachi Black came to USD in 2014 from Emory University, where he served as the Creative Writing Fellow in Poetry from 2013–2014. He earned his M.F.A. from the University of Texas at Austin’s Michener Center for Writers in 2010, and his Ph.D. in Literature with Creative Writing emphasis from the University of Utah in 2014. The recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, Black is currently at work on his second collection of poetry, Indirect Light; his first book, Storm Toward Morning, was published by Copper Canyon Press in November 2014. He teaches a range of undergraduate courses, including Introduction to Poetry as well as Intermediate and Advanced Poetry Writing, and he assists with the Cropper Writers Series while advising The Alcala Review, USD's campus literary journal.
