Lauren Slater has a masters in psychology from Harvard University and a doctoral degree in counseling psychology from Boston University. She lives and writes in Fitchburg, MA. . She is the author of eight books, including Welcome To My Country, Lying, A Metaphorical Memoir, Opening Skinner's Box, and Blue Beyond Blue, a collection of short stories. Slater was guest editor for Best American Essays of 2006. Her most recent books are The 60,000 Dollar Dog; My Life with Animals and Playing House: Notes of a Reluctant Mother. Her most recent book, published in 2018 by Little, Brown, is titled Blue Dreams: The Science and the Story of the Drugs that Changed Our Minds. It was nominated for a Pen American E.O Wilson Award for Best Science Writing. Slater is the recipient of numerous prizes and awards. Opening Skinner's Box: Great Psychological Experiments of the 20th Century was a finalist for The LA Times book Award; Skinner's Box also won the prestigious Bild Der Wissenschaft Award in Germany for the most groundbreaking science book of the year. Lying was chosen as one of the ten best memoirs by Entertainment Weekly and Amazon.com and one of the three best memoirs by The Washington Post Book World. Slater was a recipient of a 2006 National Endowment For The Arts grant.
