Kieran Quinlan (B.A., Philosophy & Psychology, Oxford, 1977; Ph.D., Literature, Vanderbilt, 1984) specializes in 20th-century American and Irish literature with emphasis on writers from the American South. He is the author of three books: John Crowe Ransom's Secular Faith (1989), Walker Percy, The Last Catholic Novelist (1996; pbk. 1998), and Strange Kin: Ireland and the American South (2005), which won the Landry Award for the best book in Southern studies from LSU Press. He has also published essays in such journals as The Southern Review, The Kenyon Review, and World Literature Today. Current projects include a book manuscript on Seamus Heaney and religion, an autobiographical response to the ongoing God debate, and a study of the life and writings of Nella Larsen. Dr. Quinlan chairs UAB’s Rhodes Scholarships Committee. He also directs the Haddin Humanities Forum and has lectured to a wide variety of public and professional audiences both at home and abroad.
