JO ANNE BENNET is a native of New York City, and lived for a decade in the UK, where she got her doctorate in social anthropology from Cambridge University. Still a frequent visitor to the north of Ghana, she divides her time between Ottawa, Canada–home to children and grandchildren–and Montgomery, Vermont.
