Greta Schuler is finishing her first novel and pursuing a master’s degree in forced migration at the University of the Witwatersrand’s African Centre for Migration and Society. As an Ambassadorial Scholar, her study and stay in Johannesburg, South Africa, is funded by Missouri Rotary District 6060.
In 2011, Greta received her master of fine arts in creative writing from American University. To date, her work has appeared in Creative Nonfiction as the winner of the magazine’s 2009 MFA Program-Off Contest, in the Crab Orchard Review as the winner of the journal’s 2010 Jack Dyer Fiction Prize, in the Chattahoochee Review as the winner of the journal’s 2012 Lamar York Prize, in the New Guard, in Cutbank, and in the Drunken Boat. Her work has also been shortlisted in contests such as Fourth Genre’s Michael Steinberg Essay Prize, Narrative’s Fall Story Contest, New Letter’s Alexander Patterson Cappon Prize in Fiction, and Hunger Mountain’s Frank Mosher Short Fiction Prize. Greta has recently completed fellowships at The MacDowell Colony and at Yaddo, where she held the Dorothy and Granville Hicks Residency in Literature.
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Greta attended college at Claremont McKenna in California and graduate school in Washington, DC. Funded through grants from both Claremont McKenna and American University, she has interned and conducted research in South Africa and Zimbabwe respectively. She is very grateful to Rotary – especially her sponsor club, Crestwood-Sunset Hills, and her host club, New Dawn – for supporting her this year in South Africa.
