Gilbert Allen was born in Rockville Centre, New York. He received his B.A., M.F.A., and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University, where he was a Ford Foundation Fellow. Since 1977 he has lived in the foothills of South Carolina with his wife, Barbara. He is the Bennette E. Geer Professor of Literature Emeritus at Furman University.
