Flora González was born in Havana, Cuba, and grew up in the city of Camagüey, on the eastern part of the island. She has been living in the United States since 1962 when she and her sister arrived in Miami as part of Operation Pedro Pan, a program that airlifted Cuban children to the US during the Cold War. She has a PhD in Hispanic Literature from Yale University, and has taught at Emerson College for almost 30 years. She writes about Cuban literature and culture produced in the island nation. She has published non-fiction pieces, including sections of her memoir, in The Caribbean Writer, Michigan Quarterly Review and The Americas Review among others.
