Elaine Ford was born in White Plains, New York on December 12, 1938. She received a bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1964. Her first novel, The Playhouse, was published in 1980. Her other novels include Monkey Bay, Missed Connections, Ivory Bright, and Life Designs.
