David Means received an MFA in poetry from Columbia University. He is the author of three story collections, including Assorted Fire Events, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for fiction and was a finalist for the National Book Critic Circle Award. His recent collection, The Secret Goldfish, has been translated into eight languages. His stories appear frequently in The New Yorker, Harpers, Esquire, Zoetrope, McSweeney’s, and numerous anthologies, including Best American Short Stories, Best American Mystery Stories, The O. Henry Prize Stories and The Ecco Book of Contemporary Short Fiction, edited by Joyce Carol Oates. He was a judge for the 2007 National Book Awards. His teaching interest include creative writing, modern and contemporary fiction and poetry, and American culture. His personal interests include pop and indie music, film, graphic novels, and contemporary art.
