The 2020 rankings are now available. Based on graduates’ appearances in five prize anthologies over the last four years, the rankings are meant to provide a rough approximation of graduate creative writing programs’ success in producing “successful” writers.
The top-ranked program overall is the Johns Hopkins program, followed by Indiana University and University of Virginia .
The top-rated programs in fiction are Johns Hopkins University, followed by Indiana University and the Iowa Writers Workshop.
For poetry, the top three programs are Johns Hopkins University, Indiana University and University of Virginia
Creative non-fiction rankings are topped by University of Arizona followed by University of Pittsburgh and University of Cincinnati.
The top-ranked PhD programs are University of Cinccinnati, Florida State University and University of Houston.
The top-ranked low-residency programs are Warren Wilson College, Bennington College and Vermont College of Fine Arts.
